Do All Large Fillings Need Crowns to Cover Them?

Posted on 7/23/2017 by Dr. Hallas
Bay Lakes Center for Complex Dentistry provides dental crowns for fillings (when necessary).
It is a common dental practice to cover a large filling with a crown. This is meant to protect the integrity of the tooth. However, does every large filling require a crown? The truth is, that question is going to be best answered based on your individual situation. For nearly all teeth, this is going to be the best practice. However, there are going to be the occasional exceptions that will allow you to choose if you want a crown or if you would rather go without.

When Large Fillings Can Go Without Crowns

If a large filling is inside your tooth, but only a minor hole comes to the surface of the tooth, sometimes the filling can be placed in a way that only allows a tiny portion of the filling to be exposed. In this specific instance, a crown is often unnecessary.

The reason that crowns are put over a large filling is because the filling is often exposed in larger amounts. This means something as simple as chewing can loosen the filling and cause it to fall out. A crown is like a cap, and it covers the exposed portion of the filling. This protects the filling from getting loose, and keeps it in place. This allows your tooth to remain strong, and it keeps your mouth fully functional, whereas a cracked or missing tooth would take away some functionality of the tooth.

When you have a large cavity that requires a large filling, it is best to talk to your dentist or your prosthodontist about what option would be best for your tooth. The more protected you can keep your teeth, the longer they will last and the healthier they will remain. Let your prosthodontist decide the best way to keep your tooth safe, and go with their experienced advice.
