Signs Your Dental Implant May Be Failing

Posted on 7/10/2019 by Dr. Hallas
Signs Your Dental Implant May Be FailingOne of the most wonderful advances in dental technology has been the dental implant. Dental implants allow us to replace missing teeth with teeth that are as strong as the originals and can rarely be distinguished from your natural teeth.

Not only can they be used to replace missing teeth, but they can also be used as anchors for dentures making that a more pleasant and reliable option when multiple teeth are missing. The best part about dental implants is that they have a very small failure rate – less than 5 percent.

The Reasons Some Implants Fail

Implants that fail do so for a variety of reasons. Early on it could be due to infections, autoimmune disorders, certain medications, a poor blood supply, poor health or poor oral hygiene. If they fail in later years, such as ten years or later, it could be due to smoking, teeth grinding, injury or other reasons.

What Are the Signs They Are Failing?

If you have implants it is important that you visit us regularly. We ill check your implant to ensure it is stable. The first sign of a failure is a slight mobility. You may not notice the mobility because it is too small to notice but we can. If it is an advancing failure, you will notice it gets wobbly or feels loose when you chew or talk. We will then order x-rays to see what is going on with your implant.

Other signs that you may notice are pain or swelling. If you experience either of these, you should make an appointment immediately. It could mean that you have an infection that needs to be treated. The good news is we can easily remove it with local anesthesia.

If you have an implant, please contact us for an appointment so we can help you keep it in good working order.
