How Are Dentures Made?

A pair of dentures floating inside of a glass jar.Your dentist has told you that you need dentures, and you are finally coming around to the idea. So what happens now?

Do you just go to your dentist office and they'll pull you out a pair from their stockroom?

The process of getting dentures is actually pretty complicated, as your denture needs to be custom-fitted for your mouth. If you're having a partial, you'll need to have other dental work done first, such as extractions, gum cleanings, and fillings, and then a dental lab needs to get involved.

These are the general steps that are involved with the process:

•  Treatment plans and assessing your mouth. Your dentist will take a look at your mouth to determine the type of denture that will be best for you, whether that is a partial bridge or a full set.
•  Molds. Your dentist will take molds of your gums and teeth using a soft impression material.
•  Impression trays. You will bite into a material that will take an impression of your mouth to send into the lab.
•  Wax blocks. These blocks are shaped in your mouth to record the shape of your dentures.
•  Recording your bite. If you need complete dentures, your dentist will record where the bite of your new set of dentures will need to be.
•  Trials. A trial appliance will be manufactured to check for appearance and fit, and it will use the same tooth shape and color that will be used for your final denture.
•  Final denture. A dental lab will create your final denture if you are happy with the trial.

After your denture has been put into place, you'll have a review appointment to determine how well your mouth is adjusting to your dentures.

Even if no adjustments are needed, you'll still be required to contact our office regularly in order to check for changes and problems.
