Teeth Grinding: Truth or Consequences

Posted on 12/10/2016 by Dr. Hallas
A woman grinding her teeth from stress.Teeth grinding, also known as Bruxism, can create a multitude of health problems if left untreated. These include, but are not limited to: enamel degradation, fractured teeth, and in extreme cases, loss of teeth. If you, or a significant other, grinds their teeth while sleeping or waking, it is important to seek treatment options from a licensed and trained professional as soon as possible.

People have been known to suffer from this ailment for years without being aware of it. If you find yourself with loose teeth, a sore jaw in the morning, or any other unexplained oral or facial malady, make sure to let your dentist know during your next appointment, if not before.

The good news is that teeth grinding, and the oral and dental problems associated with it, are fully treatable. Complete restoration is almost always achievable with a thorough regimen of restorative dental treatments. If you have any questions about teeth grinding, or would like to make an appointment with our office, please contact us today.

Why does Teeth Grinding Occur?

The jury is still out on exactly what causes teeth grinding. Some believe the cause(s) are rooted in physical ailments such as vitamin and mineral deficiencies, others believe that psychological issues such as stress are to blame, while still others believe it to be a combination of the two. These are some of the known causes of teeth grinding:

•  Some prescription medications
•  Bite Alignment Issues
•  Sleep Apnea
•  Excess alcohol consumption
•  Responses to pain

When Should You Treat Teeth Grinding?

As Soon As You Can! Grinding teeth will slowly erode your enamel until there is no enamel left. Once the enamel is weakened, or completely worn away, the likelihood of tooth decay skyrockets, and you have entered the danger-zone of oral health. We offer several solutions for teeth grinding, and the sooner we can start treating it, the greater the likelihood of a full recovery for you.

Please contact us if you have any questions about teeth grinding.
