How Tissue Conditioning Could Improve the Fit of Your Dentures

Tissue conditioning is simply a technique that prepares your gums to support your dentures better. Tissue conditioning is recommended for many situations, including, your first set of dentures, tooth extraction healing, gum irritation, painful dentures, bone loss that is accelerated due to a denture fit that deteriorates too quickly, also face shrinking and aging. Tissue conditioning addresses the injury to your gums and underlying bone, whether that's been caused by the extraction of your teeth or by previous dentures.
How Tissue Conditioning Works for Your Dentures
The thought and principles behind the process of tissue conditioning is basic – it is to simply give your gums some relief from the constant pressure that your dentures cause. The purpose of your gums is not to chew which is what having dentures does. In tissue conditioning a softer temporary denture is used. The dentures look like dentures and have actual teeth, but you really aren't supposed to chew with them. Often times you may be restricted to the diet you are on, but the purpose of this is to ensure that the gums will actually support the actual chewing in a better way after the conditioning.
The application of the soft denture tissue conditioning is also sometimes used with implant denture procedures as well when the pressure of those dentures has a potential of prolonging your implant healing process.
What if you already have dentures? Does tissue conditioning work? Sometimes a soft liner is able to be added if there are difficulties, but tissue conditioning would not be needed when your dentures had a proper full fit. Most times, after the conditioning procedure, it is necessary for new dentures that will fit you better because your gums have been healed and can support the new permanent replacement dentures. Tissue conditioning should allow a proper fit so that previous pain and injury that was previously experienced can be avoided.
