What Leads to Denture Sores?

Posted on 11/9/2020 by Dr. Hallas
What Leads to Denture Sores? You don't need to suffer from gum soreness or denture sores. Sores often emerge when you first get dentures. Therefore, you may need to schedule an appointment several different times for a reline or an adjustment. You just have to give your gums some time to get used to the prosthetic. As long as you know what leads to denture soreness, you can take the necessary steps to ease the inflammation and pain.

What Causes Denture Sores to Form?

As noted, if dentures do not fit correctly, sores can develop. Therefore, if you are having problems with the fit of your dentures, you need to make an appointment to have them adjusted. Also, when dentures slip, they rub against the gum and cause sores. That is why it is important to wear an adhesive when you wear removable dentures. In addition, sores can develop when you eat foods that are hot and spicy, or drink beverages that are ultra-hot. To prevent ulcers for developing, it helps, as well, to take your dentures out at night and soak them. That will give your gums time to rest and recuperate from wearing the prosthetic. Soaking dentures removes 99.9% of germs, and cleanses away the food particles that can irritate the gums, leading to soreness and denture pain.

How to Treat Denture Sores

If you do have sores, check with us to find out what you can use on the sores. Usually, a benzocaine anesthetic will relieve denture sore pain and soothe gum soreness. A warm saltwater rinse can also alleviate some of the discomfort. Normally, we recommend that patients take an over-the-counter pain reliever to reduce the pain, inflammation, or swelling.

Dentures can cause sores when they are new, or old dentures trigger ulcers if your jawbone and gums shrink. When this happens, the dentures become loose, thereby irritating the gum tissue and rubbing sores on the gums. In either case, schedule an appointment with us to make an adjustment or have new dentures made. You don't have to have sores and denture pain. Call us today if you need to make any changes along these lines.
