Do Cavities Cause All Cases of Sensitive Teeth?

Posted on 7/12/2021 by Dr. Hallas
Do Cavities Cause All Cases of Sensitive Teeth?Tooth sensitivity is a condition that generally results when the dentin of your tooth is exposed to unfavorable conditions. The outer layer of a tooth is covered by the enamel, a tough substance that protects the dentin. However, unfortunate events, such as vigorous brushing and formation of tartar may take place, causing your enamel to wear off, increasing the chances of tooth sensitivities. Therefore, as dental cavities are the most common cause of tooth sensitivity, they are not the only cause of sensitive teeth. Here are other causes of sensitive teeth.

Brushing Too Hard

When you brush too hard with a hard-bristled toothbrush, you increase the chances of sensitive teeth. Brushing too hard will wear down your tooth enamel, exposing the dentin. When you drink hot or cold drinks, they will reach the exposed dentin and trigger sensitivity. This is why it is important to brush your teeth gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush. You should also avoid brushing your teeth sideways because it could easily wear down the enamel.

Eating Acidic Foods

Acid foods like citrus fruit juices could increase the chances of tooth sensitivity. Acid-rich drinks and foods will erode the enamel, exposing the dentin. This will spark sensitivity whenever you drink hot or cold beverages. It is important to cut down on acidic foods and embrace foods that promote neutral pH levels. Dairy foods are a good alternative that will reduce the acid levels in your mouth.

Clenching or Grinding Your Teeth

Another cause of tooth sensitivity is grinding and clenching of teeth. Even though the tooth enamel is the strongest part of your body, it can succumb to the pressure of constant grinding and clenching. With time, the enamel will wear down and leave the underlying nerves exposed. This causes tooth sensitivity, especially when exposed to extremely hot or cold conditions. If you have a problem with the grinding of teeth, you should see us for preventive remedies. Visit our offices for more information on the causes of tooth sensitivity.
